Translating (internet) slang to battle inappropriate online behavior

In 2022, 4% of people in the Netherlands experienced online threats or intimidation. Young women were particularly affected, with 11.5% being victims of online harassment, bullying, stalking, or shame-sexting (CBS, 2023). Research shows that youth workers struggle to understand the language used, also known as slang by young people, especially in online settings.

The (part of the) solution

Unfortunately, we cannot easily solve the problem of inappropriate online behavior, but we can give youth workers a better understanding of inappropriate online situations. This design proposal allows youth workers to translate entire conversations to gain a better understanding of the situation.

Two modes

Users can translate internet slang in two modes:
1) Manual Translation: Users input slang text into the app, which outputs the text in common language. 2) Image Translation: Users upload screenshots containing slang text (like a chat or comment section), and the app replaces slang with common language.

Adding slang

A gamification system motivates teenagers to contribute slang. This includes a point system with a leaderboard. Users earn points for each slang term contributed, and the leaderboard displays top contributors. Slang terms are added to the system only after three different individuals have submitted the same term. This system is yet to be tested.
